Caffe Greco is the sort of no-nonsense neighborhood cafe where locals come to enjoy solid coffee and a relaxed spot to linger, whether it's morning or late in the evening. Tucked into San Francisco’s North Beach on Columbus Avenue, the atmosphere is straightforward and welcoming—a mix of casual tables with enough room to spread out a book or laptop without feeling cramped. It’s the kind of place where you can comfortably settle in for a while, making it a favorite for people who want a quiet corner to read, work, or have an easy conversation over coffee.

The coffee here is clearly taken seriously, with a menu featuring a variety of espresso-based drinks like Illy Macchiato Classico and a strong focus on Italian-style offerings. The espresso shots tend to be straightforward and robust, though some visitors find the cappuccinos a bit milk-heavy compared to traditional Italian versions. Beyond coffee, the selection of pastries, like toasted croissants filled with Nutella and fresh cannoli, pairs well with their drinks, making Caffe Greco a reasonable stop for a light breakfast or an afternoon treat.

Because it’s primarily self-service and cash-only, it’s wise to come prepared, which suits the casual, fast-paced vibe of this spot. During busiest times, such as weekend mornings or after dinner, the cafe fills up quickly with a mix of tourists and locals, some stopping by after a night out to enjoy sweet treats like gelato and tiramisu alongside their coffee.

The cafe’s location in North Beach lends it a slightly old-world feel, almost transporting you to a small Italian town with familiar faces streaming in throughout the day. For those looking to dive into a strong coffee or grab a simple, flavorful breakfast panini, this spot offers a taste of old-school San Francisco without fuss or pretense.

Best for:

  • Quiet morning coffee with a book or casual catch-up
  • Light breakfasts and sweet Italian-inspired pastries
  • Evening stops for gelato or late-night coffee after dinner

Who will enjoy it: Those who appreciate straightforward Italian coffee culture rooted in neighborhood tradition, locals who want a reliable comfy cafe, and visitors interested in a low-key North Beach experience away from overly touristy spots.

Best time to visit: Mornings when it’s still mellow or late evenings after other restaurants have closed. Midday can get busy but remains manageable.

Atmosphere: Casual and unpretentious, with enough space to relax, self-service rhythm, and a steady steady local flow that gives it an authentic, lived-in feel.

Whenever I end up with a book in my hand and need a place to sit, have a good cup of coffee, and read in peace, Caffè Greco almost always wins. I’m a local, and over the years I’ve tried just about every café in the neighborhood. Greco has consistently stayed near the top of my list. It’s a comfortable, no-frills spot with plenty of seating, decent space to spread out, and a steady neighborhood vibe that makes it easy to settle in for a while. The coffee is solid, the service is friendly, and it’s a reliable place whether you’re stopping by for a quick espresso or planning to sit and read for an hour or two. It’s also a good people-watching spot without feeling loud or rushed. One thing that still makes me smile is that it’s located in North Beach’s Little Italy, and it’s called Greco. The owner isn’t Greek or Italian, and most of the staff is Hispanic. But honestly, who cares? It works. It’s a great neighborhood café, and that’s what matters.

Step back in time or even into a little town in Italy and get a bite here. We got the breakfast panini and coffee. It was fantastic. As you can tell, they take their coffee seriously! It was super busy and we had to wait a few for our food, but it was worth it. Highly recommend this gem in Tiny Italy.

Capuchino was... well... americanized :) more milk that I would prefer. Tiramisu was very good but I would prefer slightly stronger taste. Be avare that this is a self service place and they accept only cash.

*cash-only -come prepared* Great late night spot for sweet treats and coffee. There might be some sketchy characters the later you arrive, but plenty of seating. We had cappuccinos and gelato and tiramisu! After a night of dinner & drinks, great way to end the night. The staff was friendly and efficient.

Accidentally stumbled into this cafe, while waiting for our pizzas to cook in a nearby restaurant. This cafe transport you back to the last century. The decor is very 1960s. The space itself is huge though and has plenty of seats. They also have an outdoor area which is nice on a sunny day. Unfortunately, they don’t accept any form of digital payment, but only cash, but thankfully, they had an ATM on the premises because we did not have any cash. The ATM machine is very expensive, though. I got a regular vanilla latte while my friend got the hazelnut latte, and both of them were pretty good. Was this the best coffee I ever had? No. What is this and perfectly acceptable cup of coffee? Yes. I also had the lemon cake, which was very flavourful, but tad bit expensive. This is a cool place to visit if you’re in the neighbourhood.
